With over 12 million cattle and 25 million sheep and goats, South Sudan has one of the largest livestock hears in Africa. However, the country currently has no modern livestock improvement, dairy or meat processing facilities. All high quality meat and dairy products for the growing urban middle-class, business and tourism markets have to be imported and prices are significantly above world market prices (due to high transportation costs). Domestic demand for meat and dairy products is estimated to be worth more than $400 million and is growing at a rapid rate, due to population and income growth and urbanization.
