The Republic of South Sudan
South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011 as the outcome of 2005 comprehensive peace agreement (CPA). The CPA ended Africa's longest-running civil war with much promise for a young nation. Made up of 32 states plus Abyei administration, South Sudan is a land of expansive grassland, swamps and tropical rain forest straddling both banks of the White Nile.
The Nile is the major geographic feature of the country, supporting agriculture and extensive wild life populations. South Sudan is highly diverse ethnically and linguistically with over 64 tribes. English and Arabic are the official languages of South Sudan, with many speaking regional dialects.
